He holds a B.S. degree in elementary education with a focus on social studies and an M. Ed. in secondary education, majoring in curriculum and instruction. He initially wrote on folk art, religion, and folklore of the Pennsylvania Dutch but has expanded his writing and interests to the architecture and folklife of the Pennsylvania Dutch, from whom he descends on both sides of his family as well as from forebears in southern Germany and the Netherlands.
