678 |b Rockville, Maryland October 8, 1929 - November 2, 2018. John Edward Patterson, 89, of Potomac, MD passed away peacefully on November 2, 2018. He was born in Paris, TN, on October 8, 1929, son of the late Robert and Cannie Patterson. ohn graduated from George Washington University in 1951. His graduate studies were interrupted by military service in the U. S. Army. He received the National Defense Service Medal and was honorably discharged in 1954. He then embarked on a career as a demographer working as a Research Analyst in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research of the Department of State. He co-authored the book Fertility and Family Planning in the United States in 1966. He worked with Blossom Hansen at the Census Bureau and they married in 1966. Thereafter he joined the National Center for Health Statistics in 1968 and served as the Director of the Department of Vital Statistics from 1974 until he retired in 1993. He played a pivotal role in the creation and implementation of the National Death Index. John was inducted as a Fellow of the American Statistical Association in 1981
