Summary: | Organized in 1830, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is often seen as an American religion, but its continued growth has been especially striking in South America, Asia, and even Africa. Sociologist Rodney Stark predicted that, if present growth continues, Mormonism will become one of the major world religions. Neither Catholic nor Protestant, Mormons nevertheless think of themselves as Christians. On an introductory level, this book describes the historical phases, the leaders and other prominent individuals, and Mormon activities in different geographical locations. Indispensable for outsiders as well as Mormons wishing to inform themselves, specialized vocabulary, including historical, organizational, and theological terms, is listed and defined. Also included are a selected chronology and a copious bibliography of published primary and secondary works. Although other works exist, none does precisely what this one does in achieving a tone that communicates clearly to a diverse audience. |
