It then addresses two sub-questions. In the first place: which are the social and political conditions that have made militant Islam into a major political force in some but not all Muslim countries? In the second place: why is it that no organized liberal reform movement has developed in Islam under any recent historical conditions? The overall conclusion is that because Islam is now becoming directly associated with political regimes that show little prospect of solving the major socio-economic problems of their countries, it may in the long run lead to a first wave of working class disaffiliation from organized religion in the Muslim world.
