Description
Résumé:The article examines the impact of the old Arabic Majnun and Layla love story on modern literature. It focuses on a study of Salah 'Abdassabur's verse drama "Layla wal-Majnun" (1970) and compares it to Louis Aragon's marxist-surrealist adaptation of the story, his romance "Le fou d'Elsa" (1963). According to the article it is the simple structure of the Majnun-Layla story - the divergence between two lovers and society, and its theme - the unity of the triad of love, madness and poetry, that has attracted interest in the story in the Arab and Islamic world for centuries and in the West with surrealism.
