Zusammenfassung:The article examines the role Islam has played in Libya in recent history. While Qadafi when first in power acted like a quasi-Muslim fundamentalist he in the late 1970s advocated a functional secularism. His opposition, the NFSL (National Front of the Salvation of Libya) led by liberal democrats as well as traditional supporters of the Sanusiyya does not suggest that the post-Qadafi era will bring about militant Islam.
