520 |a Locating the Mountain of God: Maybe the crucifixion eclipse was not intended primarily for observers in Jerusalem. Maybe the darkness in Jerusalem was incidental, collateral to the darkness arranged for a different location with a specific message. Could it have been intended for the location where the law of Moses had originated just over a thousand years before? To the ancients a total eclipse could be an ill omen. For the Levitical priesthood, the omen would be that their central role in society was about to change. From the surface of the earth there is a very narrow path along which the annulus (the ring) can be observed unbroken, and then only briefly at any given spot. To locate this ring, we selected a region of the sky above the Hijaz Mountains, the northern part of the Sarawat mountain range, wherein many think Mount Horeb might be located. Then we adjusted our latitude until the partial ring could be seen with equal amounts of sunlight at the north and at the south. The next step was to adjust the longitude to be somewhat more precisely above the mountain chain. We then advanced the clock until an unbroken ring came into view. Finally we tweaked the latitude until we obtained a perfectly-centered unbroken ring. The coordinates of this perfect plot were then jotted down for reference. The final step was to consult Google Earth and see exactly what lay below at those precise coordinates. So could this be the mountain the world has long been looking for? (Jabal Harub is the name today.)
520 |a The Exodus Story: Here is the story of ancient Israel's journey from the Nile delta across the Sinai Desert and into the land of Midian. There are other historical records which confirm that ancient Israel was indeed enslaved by the Pharaohs, but we are dependent upon scripture for most of the story. Modern tools for historical research allow us to determine a bit more than what scripture alone reports. And common sense can fill in some of the gaps. Satellite imagery is an invaluable tool with which to locate and examine important historical sites. The Lay Readers Bible Society is greatly indebted to Google and other developers for some of its most exciting discoveries
520 |a Rock that Slew Leviathan: "Leviathan" is the proper name of a fearsome beast that -- in ancient times -- was said to lurk in the waters, posing a threat to people and to nations. It is often seen to dwell in the oceans, but it is also described as a crocodile. So it was, evidently, a creature that might be encountered along the sea coast or in the mouth of a river. One finds references to Leviathan in Near Eastern mythology as early as the third millennium BCE. The term is found in the Bible beginning at Job 40:25, again at Isaiah 27:1, and it is found in Psalm 104, where it is actually regarded as a rather benign creature. Probably in none of the instances where Leviathan is mentioned in literature would a person perceive it to have been anything more than a mythological creature. Nevertheless, there may indeed once have been an actual flesh and blood beast, an oversized crocodile, extinct before the third millennium BCE, but well known to the peoples of an earlier time and greatly feared. The treatise at hand presents some evidence to support that proposition. In this write-up the word leviathan can be either singular or plural, as is true for words like deer and sheep. We propose there was a colony of leviathan living in the elbow of the Red Sea, just to the west of Mount Horeb. These were descendants of some prehistoric monster caiman. Not quite so large as their ancestors, but still substantially larger than other crocodiles and alligators of their time
