The first part treats Reitzenstein's own biography and his understanding of the history of religions. The subsequent part describes his concept of religion and the methodological perspectives which arise from it. Both of these had a decisive bearing on his research, which was geared towards demonstrating the continuity of all mental life. The main part sets out Reitzenstein's main studies and themes relating to Mandaean research, arranged in terms of three conceptual complexes: redemption, the end of the world, and baptism as a holy rite. These themes were studied by Reitzenstein with reference to their inner coherence, their age and origin, and their transformation and migration. The conclusion of the article appraises Reitzenstein as a specialist who advanced Mandaean studies in an innovative manner and influenced them in various ways. | ||
