Description
Summary:First of all the article deals with the question of the purpose of definitions of religion for the scientific study of religion. After that it provides a systematised survey of different approaches to the handling of the definition problem in the philosophy of religion, in the sciences of religion, and in the sociology of religion. The discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of the definitions offered allows the formulation of some requirements which should be fulfilled by any universally applicable definition. Finally the article submits a proposal for defining the predicate »religious«, both using the functional definition of the problem of the reference of religion and having regard to the substantial specific of religious forms of meaning. Thus the proposal combines the functional and the substantial methods of definition. This combination seems to be a practicable instrument for solving the principal problems in the definition of religion.
