520 |a The Old Turkic inscriptions from the Mongol Steppes, written mainly in runic script and stemming especially from the Orkhon River valley, are the earliest written documents of the Turks. They appear upon the stage of history in the middle of the 6th cent., and they establish, successively, three great kingdoms, viz. 1. the Kingdom of the Türküt with its Eastern Realm (552-650) and its Western Realm (552-639), 2. The Kingdom of the Kök (»Blue«) Turks (679-745) and 3. the Uighur Kingdom (744-840). We have inscriptions mainly for the 7th and 8th cent. They reflect the original religion of the Turks (at least of the rulers), but they also speak of the conversion of the ruler Bögü Khan/Tängri Qayan to Manichaeism in 762/763. The documents from the time before that conversion, in particular, give us an insight into customs, specifically burial customs, of the ancient Turks. Especially notable ist the religious interpretation of history, found in the inscriptions, which connects the fate of the Turkish people with the will of the God of Heaven ('Tängri) and with loyalty to the Khan.
