Description
Summary:At first sight, Buddhist and Christian monasticism exhibit a lot of similarities. This article concentrates on two conceivable methods to examine such similarities: a historical approach and a comparative phenomenological approach. The historical approach holds the assumption that early Buddhist monasticism had historical influence on the beginnings of Christian monasticism. After investigating the given references it seems that such an influence can not be proved. Apart from that, this approach is limited as it could cover only a certain number of basic similar religious facts but not similarities in later developments of monasticism in both contexts. A method applicable to every period in the history of both traditions is held by the phenomenological approach that is presented here as a process of three steps: a) the historical research on certain religious facts in both monastic traditions; b) the comparison of these facts on different levels (e.g. historical, socio- economical, functional, institutional etc.); c) the establishing of terms that name not only the religious facts of one tradition but "phenomena" that can be found in both. These terms for phenomena are to be located on a meta-level of phenomenological language.
