The purpose is not only to fill a scientific lack of documentation, but also to respond to the believers' notion of healing being the central experience of religious life and proof of their beliefs. Thus, an outline of Mahikari as an organization and belief-system and a detained description of the healing ritual and the implications of spirit-possession are provided. Following one individual's testimony, Mahikari's patterns of interpretation of the healing experiences (or the failing of the ritual) are researched. Finally, a retrospective view of the predecessors of Mahikari's healing ritual is undertaken.
