520 | |a The devine melek ṭā'ūs, »the angel peacock«, is the main deity of the Yezidi who traditionally are insulted to be »worshippers of the devil«. In their mythology melek ṭā'ūs is subordinated to their highest god khode, the creator of the world, and functions as a mediator between the creator and the human beings. The worship of melek ṭā'ūs is in some respect related to the cult of the sun, but its origin is still debated. The Yezidi themselves claim to be the oldest religion of the whole world or, at least, of the Middle East, originating already in prehistorian times. Actually, their religion adopted many elements from other cults and got its definite shape at the latest in the middle ages. During the last two decades, most of the Yezidi were expelled from their native country in northern Iraq and the Kurdish regions in eastern Turkey. At the utmost, 600.000 Yezidi have survived; nearly 20.000 live in Germany, where they try to keep to their traditional religious identity in spite of the great problems of the diaspora situation, which already has caused some modifications of their religion. | ||
