Summary: | The history of research of >Polytheism< has been and continues to be part of the European history of religion and insofar, it is first of all characterised by a >defence of the singular<. This Christian-theological option turns the normal case of polytheism in the history of religions into a special one and the specific achievements of polytheist religions in complex cultures are vanishing behind monistic preferences. Only in the last few decades, historical research has precisely determined the particular position of polytheism in the history of cultures and religions: Its principally regional limitation, its tendency to create »Pantheons« or systems and its specific achievement for the integration of cultures. Recently, the research on the historical phenomenon of >polytheism< has been emphasised by an actualising reception (new polytheism). There already exists a fundamentalist opposition (G. North) to these pluralistic options. |
