Description
Summary:The »Religiöser Menschheitsbund« (»Religious League of Mankind«) was founded by Rudolf Otto in the third decade of our century as an interreligious work group with the aim of asserting the ideals of social justice and pacifism in the international relationships between different countries. This essay is a short documentation of the history of the League, based partly on hitherto unpublished materials of the Rudolf Otto archives at Marburg University. The article tells us about Otto's motives and goals and investigates effectiveness of the Religious League between the two world wars from a critical point of view. In the second part of the article Otto's idea of an interreligious league is seen in relation to his works on religious philosophy and ethics, which he wrote after 1917. It becomes evident that Otto's Religiöser Menschheitsbund is a practical transposition of his theoretical work.
