This unusual collaboration was initiated with the purpose of offering rituals - for the European »market of religions« - using the plant hallucinogen Ayahuasca as an ingested sacrament. Some problematical experiences by participants in Berlin and other German cities provoked a controversial discussion in sections of the German media and led to investigations by the police. The detailed presentation of the origins and the development of the Santo Daime in Brazil sets the background for a better understanding of the circumstances of this »ritual« export. It will also allow us to contrast Brazil with Germany regarding the different ways in which the ritual is perceived and the effects which it brings about. From the analysis of the Ayahuasca rituals and their setting, as held in Berlin, it follows that their problematical (side-)effects are primarily caused by the »market of religions«, i. e. the commercialisation of the Santo Daime and its rituals, rather than by the hallucinogen Ayahuasca itself.
