520 |a Since the sixties traditional Buddhist religious systems are more and more accepted in western countries. The question, however, is whether Buddhism with its selective reception can still be seen by its western adepts as a religion according to the concept of religion shown by Oevermann. On closer inspection of the habitual modes of reception »western Buddhists« often present a totally different comprehension of the religious practice. Instead of committing to the common weal, which is specially demanded by eastern Buddhism, western adepts of Buddhism are frequently looking for psychotherapy, self-development, or self-awareness. In western reception Buddhism often is deconstructed and withdrawn from its intrinsic soteriological demand. This will be demonstrated by taking a critical look at some sequences of interviews with German students practising Vipassana-meditation.
