As in the case of the economy, religion may be considered according to the model of exchange of goods. It is important to see that, within human society, there are goods of very different kinds, e. g., material goods of consumption, but also goods that confer a special social or religious status. Besides (economically relevant) symmetric exchange there are forms of asymmetric exchange that, normally, imply relations regulated by power or care. Exchange mechanisms concern religion whenever goods approach or pass the demarcation to areas beyond the the territory of cultural control, the „transcendent" area (in a very broad sense). The end of the world shapes such a demarcation within an eschatological horizon. In this case, there are especially intense transactions and transformations of goods. | ||
