He had graduated from theology but then focused more and more on the religious and religio-philosophical background of early Christianity. This led him to the History of Religions. According to Clemen any religio-historical research has to be based on the dispassionate interpretation of mainly literary sources. Although Clemen retired due to his age in 1933 he continued his research and teaching. At the same time the political and scientific circumstances changed and as a result the Germanic Religion - which had always been one of Clemen's main concerns - became increasingly topical. His strictly historical and philological position enabled Clemen to make resolute and critical contributions to the intellectual discussion of that time. | ||
