The article answers this question in three steps. Firstly, Schomerus will be introduced in a short biographical summary, secondly, his method will be outlined, and finally the attempt will be made to show, how he could preserve his scientific integrity during the so called »Dritten Reich«. Already, before the National Socialists came to power in January 30, 1933, Schomerus took position against the distorted presentation of the History of Indo-German Religion, especially, in the circle around Mathilde Ludendorff. In spite of the chronological distance it is possible and fruitful to discuss his scientific work, regardless of the conditions of its formation. The work of this scholar from Halle is an example, that the concentration on methodologically controlled Religious Studies leads to results - even in times of being patronised by a totalitarian ideology - which can contribute to the scientific progress of this discipline. | ||
