Africa has conspicuously demonstrated vigour and vitality as a pivot for the dramatization of religion. Africans have migrated to Europe and elsewhere, largely carrying their religious identity with them. Most often, living in a different context has encouraged these migrants to reconstruct, organize, and identify »their religion« both for themselves and for the non-Africans around them. The paper examines how and to what extent African new religious communities have spread physically in Europe. It argues that African religions are involved in the globalization process, they have moved from a local phenomenon to a global context. The paper demonstrates how African new religious movements (ANRMs) are increasingly taking advantage of new forms of communication technologies in information processing and dissemination; in their task of »fishing for men and women«; as well as in their self-assertion and self-insertion on the European religious landscape. Through these processes, the ANRMs are creating a religious consciousness that attempts to assimilate notions of the global, while at the same time maintaining their local identity. | ||
