520 |a This paper deals with imperial religious politics with regard to the political, but not cultural integration of Roman Empire: political unity allows, and even causes, mobility within different areas and cultures, but, unlike in Hellenistic world after Alexander's death, without an assimilating force in the society. Goal of imperial religious politics is therefore control of ethnic tendencies und creation of a cosmopolitan agreement - or koiné. Religious politics are however subordinated to the need of a general political agreement - and political reverses bring naturally to rapid changes in religious politics. These are analyzed in a diachronic perspective from the Julio-Claudians to the adoptive dynasty. At first however some centrifugal tendencies in Empire are analyzed: polytheistic Barbarians (Celts and Egyptians, with their unacceptable human sacrifices or respectively cult of animals) and atheists (Jews and Christians, whose monotheism was not properly understood). The cultural competitions between Greeks and Etruscans or respectively Jews are also analyzed.
