520 |a Based on the fact that Buddhism was continuously criticized as a »foreign« religion during the course of the history of Chinese religions this paper investigates the potential of violence of religiously polemic rhetorics - a question which becomes the more vital considering the strong dependence of religious institutions on the representatives of the state in Chinese history. The chosen example is the Daoist »classic of the conversion of the barbarians through Laozi« which was propagated from the third or fourth century on by the Daoists in order to argue against Buddhism. It is shown that inclusivistic rhetorical and narrative strategies and their polemics and Buddhist counter-polemics have dominated the discussions around the text to a degree that it came to a total ban of this »classic« under the rule of the Mongols.
