Description
Summary:The movement of Lama Gangchen is one of several Tibetan Buddhist groups running local centres in Brazil. The group is particularly interesting because soon after Lama Gangchen had arrived in Brazil for the first time in 1987 he recognized Michel Lenz Calmanowitz, son of a Paulistan family, as a reincarnation of his deceased master. In 1994, Lama Michel entered the exile monastery Sera Me, South India. In recent years, however, Lama Michel has also become increasingly engaged in Lama Gangchen’s international activities to spread Tibetan Buddhism. In this context, it is already evident that Lama Michel’s contributions will give the movement in Brazil a considerable upswing. Above all, the article tries to explain why the case of Lama Michel is essential for the movement of Lama Gangchen. The discussion leads to a more general reflection on the dynamics within the process through which Tibetan Buddhism transforms itself into a »global religion«.
