Summary: | The recently promulgated prohibition of forcible conversion ordinance in India that bans conversion to another religion reflects a discourse in which religion is split into a horizontal and a vertical aspect. This article attempts to include reflections, elaborated in »Cultural Studies«, into the Studies of Religion, especially the analysis of conversion. It then goes on to interpret the recent mass-conversions of Dalits to Christianity, Islam or Buddhism as a positioning of cultural identity. Dominant discourses on religion are used by Dalits to express their protest against Hindutva-politics. |
