520 |a The ethical discussion of human reproductive cloning, as well as cloning for research purposes, is not only of importance in Western culture - it has also provoked discussions in Buddhist contexts. But, as bioethics is seen primarily as philosophy, cultural differences and religious narratives have been mostly neglected. Philosophers are concerned with the "truth" of ethics, or, with the task to formulate rational action-guides. In contrast, the proposed approach adapts a focus on the bioethics of religious traditions as a reaction of religious specialists to cope with modern biotechnology. It can be seen, thus, as an important perspective that may be brought into discussion by a descriptive approach of the study of religion. Indeed, in comparison to other traditions Buddhists have a different bioethical approach. They are less concerned with cloning as a grave interference in natural reproduction or an instance of "men playing god". Moreover, they do not focus on the question of human dignity. Instead, they try to evaluate if cloning will cause further suffering of sentient beings, or will imply homicide. It can be observed that Buddhists are more interested in the motives of cloning, because from the Buddhist point of view only on the side of the doer of deeds an ethical evaluation can take place.
