Therefore it might be an interesting new perspective to have a look at the 12th century and more precisely at Bernard of Clairvaux and his Apology to Abbot William. In this text Bernard elaborates a model for inner-Christian pluralism as well as a hard critique of other forms of Christian life. After a short recall of the text, the use of religio on the object level is examined. It seems possible to argue that the conflict between the old Benedictine spirituality and the new Cistercian order is also a problem of defining this religio. Finally it will be discussed whether this can be regarded as a case of ›Religionskritik‹.
