| Résumé: | Based on ethnographic fieldwork (1995-1997, 2000) that relied heavily on interviews and participant observation in the Western Cape of South Africa and the city of Cape Town, this paper explores the development of women’s empowerment and the issue of reconciliation between women of different ethnicities in the Methodist Church of Southern Africa in the first decade after the overthrow of the apartheid government. The aim of the fieldwork was to investigate whether racial boundaries between the three traditional women’s organizations in the Church would begin to dissolve and if women would find more empowerment in their congregations after the democratization of the country. |
