The ascetics, however, face a dilemma. The more they are revered, the harder it becomes to maintain the practice they are revered for. The article analyzes the ways in which the ascetic authors of certain Hindu, Buddhist, and Christian texts deal with that dilemma. Four approaches are observable: radical worldrenunciation; the generation of anti-prestige; adaptation; the institutionalization of ascetic prestige. A critical examination of the normative texts also sheds some light on the prestige concepts of householders and on debates about the abuse of ascetic prestige.
