It interprets the five crucifixion wounds that are said to have appeared on Francis’s body from a new religious-historical point of view, leaving behind thetraditional focus on biography and passion-mysticism. Whatever these stigmata may have been in reality – they mark the starting point of a an explosive dispute in the field of theology and church policy. The news about a new appearance of Christ’s wounds started a long process (about 180 years) of transfiguration in which Francis was transformed into a »second Christ«. One part of Francis’s followers were motivated by this interpretation to segregate from the church of the »first Christ«. The orthodox believers on the other hand regarded the appearance of the stigmata as a sign of confirmation. The ambiguousity of this interpretation results partly from the fact that the information about the stigmata was promoted in the form of an inconsistent legend that had to be revised after deeper reflexion. The political backgrounds are presumed as following: the alliance of pope Gregor IX. (who was put under pressure by the imperator) with the Franciscan Order, the conflict between the clergy and the mendicant orders (Franciscans and Dominicans) and the disputes between the majority of Franciscans, who were reformers, and the followers of the original ideal of Franciscan poverty, who partly intended to segregate from the church.
