For permissions, please e-mail: journals.permissions@oup.comNADEEM MAHOMED AND FARID ESACK ONLY WANT TO HELP.We both read with interest an article published online by JAAR in July 2016 entitled “The Normal and Abnormal: On the Politics of Being Muslim and Relating to Same-Sex Sexuality.” It has two aims. Its first is documentary. Mahomed and Esack show that antihomophobic movements in the West both participate in the marginalization of Muslims, by viewing them as enemies who need reforming, and ignore the rich precolonial history of Islamic cultures, which may have disapproved of same-sex desire and practices but did not pathologize them.
