The Zirides, recently arrived in al-Andalus, offer us a unique opportunity to draw comparisons between the process of Islamisation in the Maghreb and in al-Andalus. The decisive power of the tribal ǧamāʿa, the important role of women, the persistence of a Berber onomastics and the use of Berber language are features of a group that maintains a North African identity. Other areas, such as the evolution of the city, the pottery and the administrative structure of the state are clearly borrowed from the Arab-Andalusian tradition. | ||
