During the course of the century, Franciscan and Dominican missionaries successfully converted a number of Armenians to Roman Catholicism. In order to do so, they brought a significant number of texts that were translated into Armenian. The Aristotelian focus of the Dominican tradition in particular constituted a central factor in the intellectual appeal of the library that accompanied the missionaries as well as in the conversion of Armenians to Roman Catholicism. The popularity of the texts and the movement towards union with Rome stimulated both a reaction and a reformation in the Armenian Apostolic monastic schools. While Armenian Apostolic monastic teachers labored stridently against their fellow Armenian converts, they also adapted and incorporated Latin exegetical, philosophical, and organizational traditions into the Armenian monastic school system.
