The growing Muslim minority population and international events over the last decade have exacerbated tensions in Christian-Muslim relations in PNG. The basis for a further deterioration of interfaith relations exists because a majority of converts embrace Islam due to their desire to resist or reject the influence of Christianity, a religion closely associated with colonization and the destruction of traditional religions and culture. This article examines the resistance to and rejection of Christianity as an aspect of Islamic conversions in PNG by drawing on fieldwork data collected since 2007 among PNG's growing Muslim community to evaluate Christian-Muslim relations. | ||
