Summary: | The gymnase option “History and sciences of religions” deals with religious questions from the standpoint of the human sciences. The “scientific neutrality” of this approach may become paradoxical or create a “pedagogical no-go zone” if some students take the course with a standpoint of religious belief. The teaching can then seem to challenge them personally as “objects of study”, to refer to them in the third person although they are present, and moreover treat their faith as invalid. Without abandoning the paradigms of the human sciences, an epistemology of equivocation (equal worth of utterances) makes it possible to think in terms of practical versions and of forms of life (Wittgenstein), rather than a true/false or believing/non-believing dichotomy. It also takes account of the diversity of the voices present, and enables them to answer one another, without any one of them taking a decisive primacy over others or even requiring them to agree |
