Included within this diversity are individuals from the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) communities, who have historically been 'invisible' within research, policy, and clinical settings. The use of the life course theoretical model helps to illustrate the impact of the social and historical contexts for aging LGBT individuals and highlights the need to acknowledge legacies of discrimination, homophobia, and heterosexism within health and social environments. The aim of this conceptual paper is to provide a foundation for helping professionals in Canada to enhance their practice with LGBT older adults through a brief review of the literature, identification of knowledge gaps, and integration of the life course theoretical perspective. As helping professionals, social workers and counsellors are positioned to advocate for and work with LGBT older adults to ensure their voices inform the future directions of clinical care, research, and policy. | ||
| 520 | |a Vu le vieillissement de la population canadienne, il est impératif que les travailleurs sociaux, les conseillers et autres professionnels soient prêts à venir en aide à la diversité des personnes âgées dans les réseaux sociaux et ceux de la santé. Les individus issus des communautés lesbiennes, gaies, bisexuelles et transgenres (LGBT), qui ont historiquement été «ignorés» par la recherche, le milieu clinique et la politique, font partie de cette diversité. L'adoption de la théorie de la perspective du cycle de vie a le mérite de mettre en lumière l'influence des contextes sociaux et historiques sur les personnes vieillissantes LGBT. Elle souligne la nécessité de reconnaître l'héritage de la discrimination, l'homophobie et l'hétérosexisme dans les milieux sociaux et ceux de la santé. Cet article théorique vise donc à fournir des assises afin d'aider les professionnels de la relation d'aide au Canada à améliorer la qualité des soins auprès des personnes âgées LGBT. La démarche pour y parvenir s'articule autour d'une recension des écrits, l'identification des lacunes dans les connaissances et l'intégration de la perspective du cycle de vie. En aidant ainsi les professionnels, les travailleurs sociaux et les conseillers, ceux-ci seront mieux en mesure de prendre en compte les besoins des personnes âgées LGBT, de travailler avec elles et de faire entendre leur voix dans les futures orientations des soins, de la recherche et des politiques en santé. | ||
