520 |a Building on Jean-Luc Marion's treatment of givenness in Being Given, In the Self 's Place, and Negative Certainties, this essay considers how both giving thanks and the Christian eucharist can be part of a phenomenological reduction to givenness. Even a banal thanksgiving can recover the givenness of a gift that has already come into presence, as part I shows by looking at the acknowledgment pages of books. The Christian eucharistic rite, in part II, displays the revelatory case, which recovers the givenness concealed in scriptural narratives, the baptized assembly, and the anaphora of John Chrysostom. Together, they show how thanksgiving, like confessio, sacrifice, and forgiveness, performs an erotic reduction. Thanksgiving, however, reveals the givenness of a communal self: the liturgical assembly.
