Description
Summary:In this article I will analise the reception of the political philosophy of Francisco Suárez done by his disciple Pedro de Oñate. Although he developed his religious and academic career in South America, Oñate was also a former pupil of Suárez at the Universidad de Alcalá. Specifically, my article will be focused on his reflections on the nature of the king's power, and I will analise in particular both the foundations of the king's duties and the ultimate end that his role should have in society. If my approach is correct, and Oñate's political philosophy is, essentially, a continuation of that of the Grenadian theologian, the cause of the presence of Suarez's political philosophy in Latin American Society in the 17th and 18th centuries should be also credited to the development and dissemination done by his former pupils, who, like Oñate, had an active presence in the newly created universities.
