The subordination, in the first section of this article, between a first and a second order oncepts, in contrast with the subsumption between an object falling within a first-order concept and the distinction between a "characteristic mark" (notae) and a "property" of a concept, will help to clarify the dual meaning of ens ut nomen and ens ut participium in F. Suárez's Disputationes Metaphysicae. This give us cause to consider more closely, in the second section of this paper, Suárez's explication of being as real being, and the uderlying pattern of science within his historical context. As soon as one looks a bit further into the matter, however, it become apparent, as I shall consider briefly in the concluding remarks, that this inquiry on Suarez's signification of ens ut nomen and ens ut participium will be particulary helpful to bring in favour of contemporary discussion of such so-called "two sense theory of existence" and, parhaps, there may be some historical and theoretical interests, related to the logical order and the ontological commitment derived from these two sense of existence, in considering what the effect would be if a more strictly suarezian approach were followed. | ||
