Description
Summary:One of the fruits of interreligious dialogue and comparative theology is the recovery of aspects of one's own tradition that may have been neglected, forgotten or misunderstood. This paper focuses on the ways in which Christian dialogue with Hinduism and Buddhism may lead to a recovery of both doctrinal humility and spiritual humility. Engagement with the endlessly self-critical approach to doctrine in Hinduism and Buddhism has led Christian theologians to a recovery of their own apophatic tradition and to a reinterpretation of doctrine in light of the Buddhist notion of ‘skillful means'. Such epistemological or doctrinal humility in turn allows for the possibility of constructive dialogue with other religions on any topic. The second part of the paper focuses on the virtue of humility itself, and on the way in which the Buddhist conception of no-self might bring Christianity back to a proper understanding of humility as a spiritual, rather than a moral virtue. Humility may then be seen to represent the experience of no-self in relation to God. In addition to revalorizing the virtue of humility, Buddhism may also offer insights and techniques that may come to deepen and enrich the Christian practice of humility.
