Utilizing Philip Rovenius' Tractatus de missionibus (1622), this article proposes that historians should consider this Catholic reawakening within a global missionary framework. The endeavor to revitalize Catholic piety in the Netherlands coincided with a worldwide campaign to combat heresy and convert the infidel. Rovenius and other Catholic leaders drew from insights on missions in foreign lands to promote Catholic piety and practice at home. The links between conversion overseas and conversion in Europe point to parallel processes of Catholicization that included cultivating local identity within a universal tradition and relying on lay elites as brokers in unstable circumstances. | ||
