Participation within these communities uses an apprenticeship model to support its members - from the very first day as a novice - toward growth in becoming an expert in the particular field of work. Communities of practice can be powerfully used in the preparation of those who are called into teaching or mentoring professions, and there is evidence that the approach to apprenticeship used by Jesus and Paul aligns with the model and even extends it. In this article, I provide an overview of community of practice as a model for learning through scaffolded participation. I show how scaffolding is evidenced in the apprenticeship models of building of community in the Scriptures - specifically in the work of Jesus, Paul, and the early churches. Finally, I discuss how the wisdom of Scripture deepens the community of practice model, and provide application of this to our work in the preparation of teachers and those who are entering ministerial work. | ||
