Résumé: | In this theorization of Qurʾānic inimitability, ʿAbd al-Qāhir al-Jurjānī privileged maʿānī (ideas) over alfāẓ (wording), with the consequence that eloquence was not language specific and understanding was in principle always achievable. For some Muslim jurists, by contrast, Arabic was a qualitatively superior language, but one corollary of that view was the complexity of Arabic, a feature that could lead to misunderstandings of scripture. |
