520 | |a Marcel Gauchet's thesis, according to which Christianity is 'the religion of the end of religion', and in this way foundational to political autonomy, can only be explained in terms of a historical theory of the diminishing dependence of human societies upon models of heteronomous religious models for their organization. But the moment at which Christianity exits religion is preceded by the Mosaic Revelation, which introduced the first religion of transcendence, thus moving away from heteronomy (or differentiation). This philosophical theory, based upon a political history of religion, accordingly needs to be verified in the context of the history of theological-political thought within Christianity. This is particularly pertinent in the context of the 16th century Reformation. By hearkening back to the foundational text of Israel's monarchy, the political Calvinism of King James Stuart (1566-1625) accomplishes a paradoxical task, basing the autonomy of monarchical power upon God's omnipotence. This specific case, along with many others in the context of the Reformation, uses history to give credence to Marcel Gauchet's thesis of the paradox of religions of transcendence (Judaism and Christianity): religious heteronomy as a theologico-political implementation of modern autonomy.
