La martyrologie, telle qu'elle se déploie au temps des Réformes, témoigne du déchirement de la chrétienté. L'étude de l'évolution de ses formes et de sa rhétorique permet de souligner son importance dans la constitution et la diffusion d'une pensée politico-religieuse propre au xvie siècle, position que l'avènement du martyr politique semble vouloir traduire aux yeux de tous. | ||

Christians fought each other to obtain recognition by the regime of their legitimacy and the impiety of their enemies. The conflict was not merely physical : the written word played an important role in, thanks particularly to the revolution of printing and the use of the vernacular language. In the formin which it was deployed during the Reformations, martyrology testifies to the division of Christendom. Studying the evolution of its forms and rhetoric enables one to emphasise its importance in the constitution and diffusion of a form of politico-religious thought that was peculiar to the sixteenth century. The appearance of the figure of the political martyr signalled this novel status to contemporaries. | ||
