| Summary: | The First World War correspondence of Edinburgh artist (and prominent Scottish Baptist), Tom Curr and his fiancé Christian (Chrissie) Simpson is the subject of this article. The couple wrote to each other almost every day during Curr's military service and their letters provide evidence of how faith functioned as an emotional support for individuals separated by military conflict and how personal relationships can sustain faith. Using the concept of relational religion and drawing on Robert Orsi's notion of 'relational histories', together with Raymond Williams' 'structures of feeling', the discussion shows how, on his return to civilian life, Curr's engagement with 'relational religion' developed into a wider dynamic enabling him to combine his skills as an artist with his social commitment as a Christian. Jay Winter has described war memorials as 'invocations of the dead', and the article opens and closes by examining the significance of two examples of Curr's artwork featuring the Scottish National War Memorial in terms of remembrance of the fallen and duty to his fellow citizens shaped by his military experience. |
