Summary: | In the early 2000s, two parliamentary initiatives proposed moving beyond faith-based religious education in the state schools of the Canton of Ticino with non-confessional teaching of religion for all pupils. An experimental course in History of Religions (HR) was then set up by the Department of Education. The research presented in this article mainly aims to describe and understand how the actors involved in the practical implementation of this course interpreted the institutional guidelines. The findings show how the social actors understood HR as a course referring to four main logics: HR as intercultural education on religions, HR as national education on religions, HR as multicultural religious education, and HR as national religious education. |
