R. Girard's scapegoat theory with its references to the role of religion in channeling emotions andn founding identity can be accepted easly by sociological concepts such as the self-stigmatization and the formatization and the formatrion of charisma, but these ideas do not apply to religious phenomena alone. It remains an open question how contemporary conflicts could conceivably be controled with the help of a theory of sacrifice, since not only religion but now the welfare state as well is ever less in a position to fulfill its peace-making function. (Source: Franz-Xaver Kaufmann) Abstract: Die Religionssoziologie fragt nach der sozialen Funktion, die Opfer heute noch - nach Aufklärung und Säkularisation - haben könnte, zumal da ihr affektueller Charakter durch die Spiritualisierung in den Hochreligionen weitgehend verlorengegangen ist. Die Sündenbocktheorie Girards, vor allem sein Hinweis auf die affektbindende und identitätsstiftende Bedeutung von Religion kann in soziologischen Begriffen wie Selbststigmatisierung und Charismabildung aufgenommen werden, die jedoch nicht nur auf religiöse Phänomene zutreffen. Wie man sich eine opfertheoretische Bändigung der gegenwärtigen Konflikte vorzustellen hätte, da ja nach der Religion auch der Wohlfahrtsstaat seine friedensstiftende Funktion immer weniger erfüllen kann, bleibt offen.
