LOK |0 938   |l Abstract: This essay explores the role of mimesis and sacrifice in the Hebrew Bible against the backdrop of Girard's theory of religion and culture. It argues that while a sacrificial reading of the Bible is possible, a nonsacrificial approach is better able to account for the Bible's distinctiveness. This distinctiveness stems from the biblical witness to the revelation of the God of victims and includes a polemic against sacrifice and violence, especially as that polemic is found in the prophets. Part I is an overview of the sacrificial perspective, Part 2 counters this perspective, and Part 3 compares the sacrificial and nonsacrificial readings in order to highlight their points of similarity and difference. The sacrificial perspective holds that occasional violence in the form of sacrifice and warfare is potentially a healthy and redemptive form of cleansing for the people Israel. The nonsacrificial perspective counters that while violence is constitutive of Israel's cultus (that is, its prohibitions, rituals, and myths), it is not the ultimate means by which God desires that Israel renew its common life. Indeed, the violence of cultic origins is critized already in the cultic narratives. And in the stories of the patriarchs and the pronouncements of the great prophets, God's will is that Israel eventually become disengaged from sacrifice and recommitted to the victims of sacred violence. In sum, a nonsacrificial reading unmaks the structures of cultic violence in Israel's history and discloses the witness to the God who desires love and justice rather than sacrifice and burnt offerings.
