| LOK | |0 938 |l Abstract: In a move reminiscent of Karl Barth, René Girard makes the religions a disease for which Jesus Christ is the cure. My purpose in this chapter is to reformulate certain aspects of Girard's theory in a way that divorces them from what I think are Christian overclaims. My thesis is that if Girard's scapegoating process is reconceived as a thoroughly post-cultural phenomenon that occurs between societies (rather than as a pre-cultural phenomenon that founds single societies), then the polarity he sets up between Christ and the religions will break down. By tracing the mimetic play of European Christian and native South American cultures in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, I will argue, first, that Christianity conceals its own foundational violence toward other ethoi, and, secondly, that the religious response of native South American traditions works to expose and mitigate Christian violence.
